Chapter 17

THE NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL, I didn’t see Oliver at all, which was a relief. We had different classes and I was lucky enough not to run into him in the hallways.

People were still staring at me, but they’d stopped whispering about me for some reason, or well, at least they waited until I was out of earshot to gossip.

Allison shot me a glare of pure hatred when she spotted me in the hallway, but she didn’t confront me, maybe because Paola was with me.

When I got back home, I immediately threw myself on my homework and studying so I wouldn’t have the time to think about anything else.

I noticed my lips were dry, so I searched for my lip balm, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Oh right, I’d left it in the bathroom while getting ready for school this morning. Once again, I couldn’t help but be super glad that I had my own bathroom so close to my room.

I found the lip balm next to the sink, and after I applied some to my lips, I smacked them together and smiled at my reflection in the mirror.

I went out into the hallway.

A yelp escaped my mouth and I blinked twice, hoping like hell that I was dreaming.

Oliver was standing in the middle of my hallway, still wearing his school uniform, a casual smile on his face.

“Hello, princess. Missed me?” He tilted his head at me.

No.

No!

This was my safe space. Oliver shouldn’t be here. How the hell had he gotten inside? What was he doing here? My mom was supposed to be just downstairs, getting ready for work.

My heart leaped into my throat. What if he’d done something to my mom?

“What are you—” I started to ask, my voice shaky.

“Oh, there you are, honey,” my mom said as she climbed the last of the steps. “Why didn’t you tell me your friend was coming over to study?”

Because he wasn’t, and he wasn’t my friend.

What the fuck?

I met Oliver’s gaze, and the look in his eyes defied me to contradict him. But what could I possibly say, and what would Oliver do if I kicked him out of the house?

“How about I make you some sandwiches before I go?” my mom said. “If I’d known earlier, I would’ve prepared something—”

“No, Mom.” Maybe I didn’t know why Oliver was really here, but he sure as hell wasn’t staying.

“I’d love that,” Oliver said, a charming, innocent smile on his face as he turned to my mom. “Thanks, Wendy.”

Wendy? He’d already introduced himself to my mom, talked to her, and she’d decided she liked him enough to let him call her by her name.

Aw fuck.

How the hell had that happened? If only I’d heard or seen him before he started his game or whatever the fuck he was doing.

“I’ll be right back.” My mom flashed us a smile.

Oliver headed to my room as if he was at home or something.

As if he owned the whole damn house.

He let his backpack slide off
